How to lock a Google Docs to prevent editing?

To lock a Google Doc to prevent editing, you have a couple of options to control and restrict access to the document. While there's no direct "lock" feature that completely freezes a Google Doc for all users, you can manage the document's permissions to effectively achieve the same result. Here's how:

Changing Editing Permissions

Open your Google Doc: Navigate to Google Docs and open the document you want to lock.

Share or Share settings: Click on the "Share" button in the upper right corner. If you've already shared the document with others, you might see their icons or names there. Clicking on it will open the sharing settings.

Manage access:

If the document hasn't been shared yet, you can add people or groups by their email addresses and then select "Viewer" from the dropdown menu next to their name. This allows them to view but not edit the document.

If the document has been shared, click on the settings gear icon in the top right corner of the sharing settings panel, and ensure that "Editors can change permissions and share" is unchecked to prevent others from changing these settings back.

Advanced Permissions:

For more control, under the "Share with people and groups" field, you can click on the dropdown next to the added people’s names (if they have been added) and choose “Viewer” to ensure they can only view the document.

If you want someone to be able to suggest changes without directly editing, you can choose "Commenter" instead.

Link Sharing: If you're using link sharing, click on the "Change to anyone with the link" (or it might display the current status, like "Anyone with the link can view") to manage who can access the document via a shared link. You can set it to “Viewer” for anyone who has the link, which means they can't edit the document.

Save and Done: Review your settings, then click “Done” to apply them.

Using "Suggesting" Mode for Controlled Edits:

If you want people to propose edits without directly changing the original text, you can use the "Suggesting" mode:

Open the Google Doc and go to the top-right corner.

Switching Modes: Next to the “Share” button, there’s a pencil icon. Click on it and select “Suggesting.” This mode allows users to make suggestions that look like edits, but these suggestions don’t become part of the document unless approved by the document owner or an editor.

Publishing as a Web Page

For a more permanent lock, where the document is essentially turned into a static page:

File Menu: Click on "File" in the top menu.

Publish to the web: Select "Publish to the web."

Publish: Click “Publish.” Note, this makes the document accessible as a web page, which is a view-only format and can be shared with a link.

Each of these methods has its own use case depending on whether you're looking to completely restrict editing, allow for suggestions, or share the document in a view-only format widely.
